Introduction to Denbigh

Denbigh is a medieval market town situated in the Vale of Clwyd.

The estimated resident population for the area is approximately 10,000 with a strong Welsh culture.

The town offers convenient mix of retail with good parking capacity. Retail and services are primarily focussed on local community and surrounding hinterland.

The town centre sits within a Conservation Area and has a rich history with a range of architecturally significant buildings.

An industrial area on the edge of town recently expanded demonstrating commitment to local employment The town has a number of primary and secondary schools, a library and a theatre not to mention the castle and historic walls.

Project overview: Redevelopment of empty building into for mixed commercial uses, to include a café, business units and holiday let.

Awel y Dyffryn

Project overview: Awel y Dyffryn is an extra care housing scheme opened in 2021 by Grwp Cynefin in partnership with Denbighshire County Council, providing 66 units of independent living accommodation.

Funding: Grwp Cynefin, Welsh Government and Denbighshire County Council.


Maes Y Goron/Maes Y Dre

Redevelopment of Former North Wales Hospital

Project overview: Support for demolition and enabling works to facilitate the restoration of the main range building and the redevelopment of the site.

Funding: Growth Deal, UK Government Levelling Up Fund and private sector.

Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn, Denbigh

Project overview: A new building for Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn and allow the school to operate from a single site in Denbigh. Strategic Outline Case approved by Welsh Government. A planning submission is expected towards the end of 2023 early 2024.

Funding: Welsh Government Sustainable Communities for Learning and Denbighshire County Council.

Denbigh Health and Social Care Project

Project overview: Redevelopment of health and social care services that will meet the future needs of the citizens of Denbigh and the local area. To include the upgrade and expansion of Dolwen Residential Care Home and develop a health and well-being hub including GP practice(s) in either (or in both) Caledfryn or the Infirmary building. Currently at Feasibility stage.

Funding: In partnership with BCUHB - Stage 0 form submitted for potential Welsh Governmment Integrated Regional Capital Funding as part of the Regional Integrated Fund for Health and Social Care.

Ysgol Pendref, Denbigh

Project overview: Upgraded facilities for Ysgol Pendref. Feasibility work is currently being progressed.

Funding: Welsh Government Sustainable Communities for Learning and Denbighshire County Council.

Denbigh High School

Project overview: Remodelled and refurbishment accommodation for Denbigh High School. The design brief for the project is currently being developed in partnership with the school.

Funding: Welsh Government Sustainable Communities for Learning and Denbighshire County Council.

Twm o’r Nant, Childcare Provision

Project overview: A new facility for the existing Meithrin provision will be built on the existing Ysgol Twm o’r Nant site. Funding has been awarded by Welsh Government and a pre-contract meeting will be held in November 2023 prior to commencement of works.

Funding: Welsh Government Childcare Capital Grant.

Llwyn Eirin

Project overview: Construction of Passivhaus homes on greenfield site.

Funding: Housing Revenue Account and Welsh Government Innovative Housing Grant.

St Brigid’s Active Travel Route

Project overview: Construction of shared use active travel link between ‘ATS roundabout’ and St Brigid’s school. Project includes widening existing eastern footway, along the A543, to a suitable width for shared use by pedestrians and cyclists. The project is an extension of a project that was undertaken along Rhyl Road in 2023/24.

Funding: Welsh Government Active Travel Fund.

Lenten Pool Active Travel Scheme

Project overview: An Active Travel Scheme in Lenten Pool.

Funding: Welsh Government Active Travel Fund.


Denbigh Buttermarket Community Hub

Project overview: Repurpose a Grade II listed building to create a health, wellbeing and culture centre with a museum area and archives. Incorporating an area for work / training.

Funding: UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund.

Project value: £1,200,000
