Referendums

A referendum is a vote on a question about a particular issue or policy. Usually you are asked to vote either ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

It means that you can make a direct decision on a question rather than letting your elected representative decide on your behalf. Referendums are not used very often in British politics.

The EU referendum was held on the 23rd June 2016 asking the question:

Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?
