UKSPF project: Changing Places – Changing Lives
Project lead: The Royal Mencap Society (Mencap)
This project covers more than one local authority.
Project overview
Our project will install 2 Changing Places Toilets in Denbighshire and 2 in Conwy to ensure people with complex and multiple impairments can access facilities that provide the space and equipment they need to enjoy day-to-day activities many take for granted.
In collaboration with families, disabled people’s organisations (DPOs), Disability Access Groups and other key stakeholders including The Federation of Small Businesses, engagement sessions will be held to support local communities to identify sites for facilities.
Engagement activities will advocate for Changing Places Toilets (CPTs) and promote inclusion for disabled people. We will equip partners to sustain and build on this important work.
Project update
March 2024
In December and January, Mencap Cymru consulted with 311 individuals across 13 different community groups in Conwy and Denbighshire. A shortlist of eight locations (4 in each county) was selected based on popularity, existing provision, and ensuring there was a good spread across the county.
During February and the beginning of March, we met with all 8 venues to determine what barriers may exist, and how the venues’ management or host organisations think about having a Changing Places facility. Work is now being undertaken to determine these barriers before the final 4 locations are chosen.
