Broadband speeds are measured in 'megabits per second', often shortened to Mbps. The higher the number of Mbps you have, the faster your internet connection will be.

Superfast broadband is defined as being 30Mbps or higher.
How fast is Ultrafast broadband?
Ultrafast broadband is defined as being 100Mbps or higher.

Internet connection options
ADSL
The most basic internet connection is called ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). This system utilises your copper phone lines. Because the electrical signal degrades over the copper cable, the further away from the exchange you are the slower your internet connection will be.
FTTC
‘Fibre To The Cabinet’ utilises the copper phone lines from the street cabinet to your premises, but the cabinet itself is connected via a fibre optic cable. Replacing a large part of the cable length with fibre increases the speed to the premises. Maximum FTTC speed is 80Mbps.
FTTP
‘Fibre To The Premise’ is the ultimate internet connection. The internet connection utilises fibre optic cables from the exchange to the premise. Maximum FTTP speed is 1000mbps.
4G/5G Mobile Phone Network
It is possible to utilise the 4G or 5G mobile phone network for your internet connection. Ideally this would involve a router with external antennas as these would increase the overall speed and reliability. Other devices such as 4G dongles, Mi-Fi or even your mobile phone in hotspot mode can also be used. Using such devices in rural areas or in properties with thick wall, the available speed may be decreased due to the small built-in antennas.
Satellite
Satellite internet connections are available, but these have limitations and can be expensive.
Wireless broadband
Some providers offer a wireless based internet connection. They are only available if you live near one of their broadcast towers.
